Arla calls for one body to regulate rental sector
The Association of Residential Lettings Agents (ARLA) has said
there should not be two separate bodies to regulate standards in
the private rental sector and another in the social housing
sector.
Giving its response to a law commission report on private renting
that was published last week, ARLA stated that it broadly welcomed
its content.
However, it said a proposal to have two separate standards
monitoring bodies would not be the best way forward.
"We must start with a single code and a single set of standards.
Otherwise we will end up with different monitoring for different
standards," argued Ian Potter, ARLA's head of operations.
He also suggested there should not be a situation where different
local authorities each operate to their own set of standards.
Giving its verdict on the report on Friday, the National Landlords
Association said it welcomed the idea of local councils being more
involved in regulation.
