People 'happy to do DIY in their own homes'
One sector commentator has noted that many people are happy to
tackle DIY jobs when they live in their own home.
Duncan Hayes, editor of Build It magazine, explained that, once
people have found an estate agent, signed contracts and secured a property,
they feel that they are able to put their own stamp on it.
He noted that many consumers who rent do not feel comfortable with
the idea of tackling home improvement jobs in case they cause some
damage and are unable to receive their entire deposit back.
In addition, Mr Hayes said landlords will often carry out repairs
themselves, rather than get a tenant to deal with it.
He concluded: "People would normally wait until they have actually
bought a house before experimenting with things. They think: 'If I
make a small mistake and my wall is damaged there's not a deposit
at stake.'"
Mr Hayes made his comments after a recent survey of 3,000 men by
Screwfix indicated that 51 per cent of men in their 20s do not know
how to rewire a plug.
